I want to exercise daily, but sometimes I can’t bring myself to start. I want to simplify my life, and I complicate it by analyzing the simplification. Some days I fantasize about a cabin on a mountain, or an island, just me and my thoughts and a total absence of other people’s opinions. Other days I count the hours until a barbecue with friends — the noise, the stories, the laughing until someone can’t breathe — and the idea of being alone on a mountain sounds like a punishment invented by someone who hates me. Some evenings I want to be alone with my own mind, which I consider excellent company. Other evenings I want to hold someone, to be held, to give and receive love in all its forms — including the ones that don’t require conversation. I want to share my life with someone, and I am relieved that no one depends on me. These are not phases I alternate between on a tidy schedule. I hold them at the same time, all of them, simultaneously, the way you’d hold a full cup of coffee in each hand while someone asks you to open a door.
And the desires themselves are not stable. When everything is fine, I catch myself wanting a bigger house, better resources, a nicer car — the standard acquisition stack of a person whose baseline needs are met and whose brain has therefore invented new ones, because apparently that’s the service it provides. Then something goes wrong with my body, and the entire stack collapses instantly to a single item: I just want to be healthy. I want to move freely. I want the ordinary Tuesday I was bored by last month. The wanting doesn’t shrink gracefully — it snaps, like a rubber band, back to fundamentals. And then, when health returns, the stack quietly rebuilds itself, floor by floor, and within weeks I’m back to comparing houses. I have watched this cycle run in myself enough times that I can no longer pretend the desires are the signal. They’re the weather. Something else underneath is the climate.
For most of my life I treated all of this as a bug. A thing to debug. Somewhere in my mental architecture, I assumed, there was a contradiction that needed resolving — and once resolved, I would finally know what I actually want, and could proceed to want it cleanly, the way people in films seem to. I have spent a genuinely impressive amount of analytical effort trying to collapse these contradictions into a coherent position. The effort has failed with a consistency that, in any other domain, I would have accepted as data. In this domain, I called it “needing more time to think,” which is what analysts say instead of “losing.”
Physics has a name for a system that exists in multiple states at once until it’s forced to pick one. It’s called superposition. And the more I’ve read about it, the more I’ve come to suspect that the contradiction was never the problem. The problem was my assumption that a person is supposed to be in one state at a time.
Through the lens of quantum mechanics
In quantum mechanics, superposition is not a metaphor and not a mystery — it is the mathematically precise description of how systems behave before measurement. A quantum system, such as an electron passing through Thomas Young’s famous double-slit apparatus, does not travel through one slit or the other. Its wave function evolves through both possibilities simultaneously, and the interference pattern that emerges on the screen — alternating bands that could only be produced by something passing through both slits at once — is the physical evidence. This has been experimentally confirmed with photons, electrons, atoms, and even organic molecules containing hundreds of atoms. It is one of the most rigorously verified phenomena in the history of science.
The strange part — the part that made Einstein deeply uncomfortable and still fuels interpretive debates a century later — is what happens when you measure. Place a detector at the slits to see which path the particle takes, and the interference pattern vanishes. The act of extracting which-path information collapses the superposition. The system, forced to answer the question “which one?”, stops being both and becomes one. The richness disappears precisely because you demanded clarity.
I want to be careful here, because the popular literature is full of quantum mysticism, and I refuse to add to it: human minds are not quantum systems in any physically meaningful sense. Consciousness does not collapse wave functions. Your thoughts are not entangled with the universe. Anyone selling you quantum healing is selling you a vocabulary, not a mechanism.
But the structure of the analogy — not the physics, the structure — is precise enough to be useful. A system can exist in multiple states simultaneously, and forcing it to declare a single state destroys information that was really there. The interference pattern was real. The both-ness was real. The demand for a definite answer is what erased it. I read that and thought: I have been placing detectors at my own slits for fifteen years, demanding to know which one I really want, and wondering why the pattern keeps disappearing.
Through the lens of motivational psychology
Psychology has a partial explanation for why my desires reorganize themselves so dramatically around health, and it is less flattering than I’d like: the motivational system was never designed to report what matters. It was designed to report what’s missing.
The popular version of this is Maslow’s hierarchy — the pyramid everyone knows and Maslow never actually drew. The rigid pyramid is a simplification that later research complicated considerably, but the underlying observation survives scrutiny: deficits at the foundation override everything above them. Not gradually — hydraulically. When the body fails, the pressure from below doesn’t politely renegotiate with your career ambitions. It shuts off the water to the upper floors entirely. This is why a health scare doesn’t make you less interested in a bigger house; it makes the bigger house momentarily unintelligible, a artifact from someone else’s life.
The second mechanism is hedonic adaptation — documented since Brickman, Coates, and Janoff-Bulman’s 1978 study comparing lottery winners and accident victims with paraplegia, and refined across decades of subsequent research. Both groups drifted back toward their emotional baselines far more than anyone predicted, including themselves. The system doesn’t track states. It tracks changes in states, and then it recalibrates and goes quiet. This is why the desire to exercise appears precisely when I can’t move freely, and evaporates precisely when I can. The system detected a deficit, screamed, the deficit resolved, the system went silent. It was never designed to make me happy. It was designed to make me solve problems, and in the absence of problems, it invents comparisons — a nicer car, a bigger house — because a comparison is a synthetic deficit, and synthetic deficits are the only fuel it knows how to burn when the real ones are gone.
Underneath the shifting stack, though, I’ve noticed something that doesn’t rotate with the weather. When I ask what all the configurations of wanting have in common — the cabin days, the barbecue days, the ambition days, the hold-someone days, the health-scare days — the common denominator is something I can only call “liniște:. The Romanian word carries more than “peace” or “quiet”: it’s the state where nothing is screaming, where the system isn’t firing deficit alarms, where you can hear yourself exist. Every desire I have, examined closely enough, is a hypothesis about what would produce “liniște”. The cabin is a hypothesis. The barbecue is a hypothesis. The bigger house is a hypothesis with a mortgage. Most of the hypotheses are wrong — the wanting machine is a poor forecaster of its own satisfaction, a finding so well-replicated in the affective forecasting literature (Gilbert and Wilson’s work on how badly we predict our own future feelings) that it should be printed on the packaging of every ambition. Possibly as a warning label. This desire may not contain the satisfaction depicted on the box.
Through the lens of psychology of ambivalence
Psychology has also studied my broader condition, it turns out, under a less glamorous name: ambivalence. The state of holding strong positive and negative evaluations — or contradictory desires — toward the same object, simultaneously. Not alternating. Simultaneously. The research distinguishes this carefully from indecision or mood swings: the ambivalent person is not unsure what they feel. They feel both things, clearly, at once.
The classical view treated ambivalence as a problem — a source of discomfort, procrastination, and psychological tension that people are motivated to resolve. And the discomfort is real: studies consistently link high subjective ambivalence to anxiety and decision paralysis. But a more recent line of research, synthesized in a review by Rothman, Pratt, Rees, and Vogus in the Academy of Management Annals (2017), documents the functional side: ambivalence, handled well, is associated with more accurate judgments, greater cognitive flexibility, and more creative problem-solving. People experiencing mixed emotions made more accurate assessments in subsequent tasks — the discomfort appeared to push them toward more careful thinking, not less. The both-ness, it turns out, carries information that the collapsed, single-minded state does not.
Even more interesting is the cultural dimension. Research on dialectical thinking — the cognitive style that accepts contradiction as inherent to reality rather than as an error to be fixed — shows systematic differences in how people experience mixed emotions. Hui, Fok, and Bond (2009), in Personality and Individual Differences, found that dialectical thinkers experience ambivalence with less distress and more evenly across positive and negative events. Cross-cultural studies consistently find that people from East Asian backgrounds, whose philosophical traditions treat contradiction as a feature of reality, report less discomfort with mixed emotions than Westerners, who inherit a logic insisting A and not-A cannot both be true. The Western question “are you happy or unhappy?” has the structure of a measurement device. It demands collapse. Other traditions ask better questions.
Which suggests something slightly embarrassing about my fifteen years of trying to debug my contradictions: the bug was not in the contradictions. The bug was in the compiler I was using to evaluate them — a compiler that throws an error on any statement of the form “I want X and I want not-X,” when the statement was never a logical proposition in the first place. It was a description of a system in superposition. The compiler was the wrong tool.
Through the lens of machine learning
There is a concept in machine learning that took me embarrassingly long to connect to my own life, given that I use it professionally: the multi-objective optimization problem. Most real systems cannot be optimized for a single objective. A model that maximizes accuracy may sacrifice speed. A system tuned for precision loses recall. The mathematical structure of these problems is well understood: there is no single optimal solution. There is instead a Pareto frontier — a set of solutions where improving one objective necessarily worsens another. Every point on the frontier is “optimal” in the sense that you cannot do better on all dimensions at once. The choice between points is not a mathematical question. It is a values question, and mathematics politely declines to answer it.
The naive approach — collapsing multiple objectives into a single weighted score — is exactly what beginners do and exactly what fails. The weights are arbitrary. The collapse hides the trade-off instead of resolving it. The mature approach is to keep the objectives separate, map the frontier, and accept that you are choosing a trade-off, not finding an answer.
My contradictory desires are, structurally, a multi-objective optimization problem. Connection and autonomy are both real objectives. The cabin and the barbecue are both real objectives — one optimizes for silence, the other for belonging, and no known location in Romania offers both simultaneously, though I have checked. Wanting to share life with someone and being relieved no one depends on me are not a logical contradiction — they are two objectives with a trade-off surface between them, and every possible life is a point on that frontier. What was confused was my expectation that a single point could maximize everything — that somewhere out there was a life configuration that scored perfectly on connection and autonomy and freedom and health and ambition, if only I analyzed hard enough to find it. I was, in effect, filing a feature request with reality. Reality has a long backlog and no product manager.
There is no such point. There was never going to be such a point. The Pareto frontier doesn’t have a summit. It has a curve, and living is the act of choosing where on the curve to stand — provisionally, revisably, and without the comfort of having solved anything. And here is the part I only recently understood: the “balance” I kept searching for — the stable configuration where all objectives are satisfied and stay satisfied — is not a point on the frontier at all. It’s a fiction about the frontier. Any equilibrium built from circumstances (health holding, business holding, loved ones fine) dissolves the moment any circumstance moves, because circumstances were never mine to hold. What I was calling balance was just a photograph of the wave at a nice moment. The wave did not agree to stay.
Through the lens of the psychology of uncertainty
This is the newest lens for me, and the one that has changed the most about how I operate — so I’ll report it carefully, because the research here is unusually good.
My deepest fear about the oscillation of life is not the oscillation itself. It’s the possibility that one day the wave goes down and doesn’t come back up — that the sinusoid flatlines in the negative. Given how much suffering I’ve watched around me lately, this is not an irrational fear. It’s a probabilistically literate one. Things do sometimes fail permanently. Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn’t been paying attention.
But here is where my probabilistic mind was making a technical error, and I say this as someone who makes his living catching technical errors: I was treating the probability of a negative event as a prediction of my future state. These are different quantities. The affective forecasting literature — Gilbert and Wilson’s extensively replicated work — shows that humans systematically mispredict how future circumstances will feel, and the bias is directional: we forecast catastrophe and experience adaptation. People living through conditions I currently fear report, on average, quality of life far closer to baseline than anyone predicts — including themselves, beforehand. My probability estimates about events might be well-calibrated. My predictions about experiencing those events are, by the best available evidence, systematically and pessimistically wrong. For a person who prides himself on calibration, discovering a large uncorrected bias in his own forecasting model was humbling in a specific, useful way.
The second finding concerns hope, a word I had essentially discarded as incompatible with probabilistic honesty. I cannot make myself believe comforting falsehoods; my mind runs the numbers whether I ask it to or not. What I didn’t know is that the dominant scientific framework of hope — C.R. Snyder’s hope theory, validated across hundreds of studies — contains no belief component at all. Snyder defined hope as two measurable cognitive capacities: agency (the energy to move toward goals) and pathways (the ability to generate alternative routes when one closes). His 2002 synthesis in Psychological Inquiry states the conclusion plainly: under this definition, no evidence exists for “false hope” — because hope, properly defined, makes no predictions about outcomes. It makes predictions about your behavior: whether you will look for another route or not. The terminally ill patients who “still hope,” whom I couldn’t understand through a probabilistic frame, are not miscalculating odds. They are running pathways thinking on redefined goals — not “full recovery” but “one more good summer,” “finishing this thing,” “being present today.” The goal moved. The mechanism survived. Clinicians call this mature hope, and it explicitly includes the meta-skill of releasing a goal the evidence has closed and building routes toward a new one.
And the third finding is about uncertainty itself. There is now a substantial RCT literature on intolerance of uncertainty — considered a core transdiagnostic mechanism in anxiety. A 2023 meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials found a large therapeutic effect (g = 0.89) for interventions targeting it directly. The active ingredient is not reassurance and not analysis. It is behavioral exposure to uncertainty: doing things without guarantees, in graded doses, repeatedly, until the nervous system learns empirically — not rhetorically — that it can operate without certainty. The elegance of this, for someone like me, is that it’s the only form of evidence my mind actually accepts: data generated by my own behavior. You cannot think your way into tolerating uncertainty. You can only act your way into it, and let the results update the model. I have been quietly running this protocol on myself, one exposure at a time. Each cleared obstacle recalibrates the next prediction. The genuinely novel situations remain the hard case — the calibration transfers imperfectly to the truly unknown — but the research suggests even there, something carries over: not situation-specific confidence, but a revised prior about my own robustness. Which is, when you think about it, the only possible preparation for what cannot be anticipated.
Through the lens of philosophy
Western philosophy, for most of its history, has been aggressively anti-superposition. Aristotle’s law of non-contradiction — that a thing cannot both be and not be in the same respect at the same time — sits at the foundation of the entire logical tradition. It is a spectacular tool for mathematics and engineering. It is a questionable tool for describing the inner life of a person, where wanting and not-wanting the same thing in the same afternoon is not a logical error but a Tuesday.
Other traditions made room. Heraclitus, before Aristotle closed the door, insisted that opposites are jointly necessary — that the tension between them, like the tension of a bow or a lyre, is what makes the thing work at all. The Taoist tradition built an entire cosmology on the interpenetration of opposites: yin does not defeat yang, and the attempt to purify one out of the other destroys both. And F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was not a philosopher but occasionally outperformed them, wrote in 1936 that the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.
I’d sharpen Fitzgerald slightly. The test is not holding two opposed ideas. Anyone can do that briefly, the way you can hold your breath. The test is building a life on top of two opposed ideas without demanding that one of them win — living inside the tension the way Heraclitus’s bow lives inside its tension. Loose the string, and you don’t get peace. You get a stick.
The Stoics, whom I keep returning to in these articles like a man checking whether his keys are still where he left them, had the relevant distinction all along. Epictetus separated what is up to us from what is not. My contradictory desires are mostly not up to me — they arise from biology, history, and circumstance, exactly as Sapolsky would insist. The oscillation of life is not up to me. What is up to me is narrower and more valuable: whether I treat the contradiction as an emergency, and whether I keep generating the next route when the current one closes. That framing — the contradiction is real, permanent, and not an emergency; the wave is real, uncontrollable, and not a verdict — turns out to be doing more for me than any resolution ever did.
Connections
Superposition sits at the center of several earlier pieces without my having noticed while writing them. Projection was about collapsing another person into a single image — refusing them their superposition. Overfitting was about collapsing uncertainty into false precision through excessive research. Anchoring was about the collapse that happens when a first reference point forces all later evidence into its frame. Fragility documented what happens when you optimize for one objective and discover the others were load-bearing. And Entropy described the self as multiple locally coherent stories that contradict each other globally, which I now recognize as this article’s thesis wearing different clothes. Apparently I have been writing about superposition the entire time and only just performed the measurement.
What I Don’t Know
I haven’t engaged with the actual interpretive debates in quantum foundations — Copenhagen versus many-worlds versus objective collapse — and a physicist would rightly note that “superposition” means something far more constrained than my usage; the gap between mathematics and metaphor deserves more honesty than one caveat paragraph. I haven’t explored the psychoanalytic tradition, where holding contradictory impulses is foundational — Freud’s ambivalence, Melanie Klein’s work on integrating love and hate toward the same object — a century of clinical literature I know only secondhand. I haven’t looked at the neuroscience of competing motivational systems — approach and avoidance circuits that operate in parallel and can fire simultaneously, which might give the “committee” metaphor an actual anatomical address. I haven’t addressed decision theory’s formal treatments of preference incompleteness, where economists have quietly acknowledged for decades that real agents lack the coherent preference orderings the models assume. And I haven’t answered the question a careful reader will ask: whether there are contradictions that genuinely do require collapse — choices that must be made cleanly, goals that must be renounced entirely — and whether I would recognize one if it arrived, or analyze it into superposition to avoid the cut.
Where I Stand
I’ve stopped trying to resolve the contradictions. Not as resignation — as a change of method, and a fairly recent one, which means I hold it provisionally, the way this entire project holds everything.
Concretely: when I notice myself wanting two incompatible things, I no longer convene the internal tribunal to determine which desire is legitimate. I name both. “I want company tonight, and I want to be alone tonight.” “I want the mountain cabin, and I want fifteen people around a grill asking why I’m quiet.” Naming both, without adjudicating, defuses most of the urgency — because the urgency was never coming from the desires. It was coming from the belief that their coexistence was a malfunction requiring immediate repair. Remove the belief, and what remains is information: two accurate readings from two real instruments. The tribunal, I should note, still tries to convene occasionally. I’ve stopped providing refreshments.
I’ve also stopped chasing balance as a state. The equilibrium I used to pursue — everything stable, everything satisfied, everything holding — was a configuration of circumstances, and circumstances are on loan. What I aim for now is quieter and more durable: “liniște” not as the absence of waves but as a working relationship with them. The wave goes up; I don’t mistake it for arrival. The wave goes down; I don’t mistake it for the end. The fear that the wave might one day not come back is real and I don’t argue with it — but I’ve learned that my forecasts of how the down states will feel are systematically, measurably too dark, and that the honest response to a known bias is to correct for it, not to obey it.
And I act — this part hasn’t changed, because I learned it long before I could name it. I don’t wait for motivation; appetite comes with eating, and I’ve been eating without appetite for years. The refinement is at the edges. On the days the body itself fails — the genuinely hard case, where the tool of action is the thing that’s broken — I’ve stopped applying the healthy-day standard and calling the gap laziness. The action scales to the day: the full session, or the short walk, or the breathing exercise from bed. Minimum consistent contact beats maximum intermittent effort — I wrote that about tissue once, and it took me embarrassingly long to notice it was also about the will. And when a route closes, the question is no longer “what are the odds?” The question is “what’s the next route?” — including, when necessary, routes toward redefined destinations. That’s not optimism. That’s the only definition of hope that survives contact with a probabilistic mind, and it turns out to be enough.
The last piece is knowing when to stop knowing. My old stopping criterion for research was epistemic — “do I understand this fully?” — which has no terminating condition and I have the browser history to prove it. The new one is operational: I stop when I know the next action and the signals that would make me reconsider. That’s it. Not full understanding — a plan for tomorrow and tripwires for revision. Everything else stays in superposition, unmeasured, uncollapsed, costing me nothing.
I still want connection and solitude, the cabin and the barbecue, building and resting, everything and quiet. I expect to want all of it for the rest of my life, and I have stopped apologizing to myself for the inventory. The difference is that I’ve stopped waiting for the interference pattern to resolve into a single clean dot before living. The pattern is the life. The both-ness is the accurate reading. And a person who can act inside that — one scaled action at a time, one route after the closed one, without demanding the wave function apologize — is, as far as I can currently tell, as resolved as a person gets. Which is to say: not very. Which is to say: enough.
